In France only the civil ceremony at the town hall (or before a delegated mayor) is legally binding. The secular, religious, or symbolic ceremony that follows is flexible: you pick the venue, texts, speakers, and order.
Without structure it can run 20 minutes or 90, with awkward silences or endless speeches. An officiant, even a volunteer one, holds the thread.
