The civil ceremony is the legal step. Without a complete town hall file, no official date, no valid marriage contract on the big day. In France national rules apply everywhere, but office hours and ceremony slots vary by commune.
At Drakkar Software we often see couples book the reception venue before checking town hall availability. Flip the order: town hall first, or at least a hold, then everything else.

Documents usually required

Birth certificate less than 3 months old (or extract with parentage)
Proof of address or residence certificate if you do not live in the commune
ID and witness details (often 1 or 2 per partner)
Information on both partners: occupation, parents, nationality
Prenuptial agreement if applicable (notary before the wedding day)

What banns are for

Banns are posted at the town hall for at least 10 days before the wedding. They publicly announce your intent to marry and allow time for any legal objections.
This waiting period cannot be skipped. For a June Saturday, do not file the day before. Book an appointment 2 to 3 months ahead of your target date, earlier in peak season.
Marrying in a commune other than where you live? You may need a waiver or certificate depending on the case. Ask both town halls early.
