Wedding guest list: negotiate without conflict

The guest list is the first real stress after the proposal. Each family has expectations, the venue has capacity, the budget has a cap. Without a method, you keep adding names until a caterer quote forces you to cut. Set the cap first in the budget calculator.

Three tiers, not a flat list

Must: close parents, siblings, witnesses, godparents

Would: close friends, aunts/uncles you actually see

If-space: coworkers, distant cousins, debatable plus-ones

Rules that defuse tension

Each partner owns their side's siblings and « must » guests. Adds on the other side need mutual agreement.

Written cap before the family debate (e.g. 85 guests max).

No automatic +1: only married or engaged couples, or case by case.

Kids: global rule (all / close family only / none), not guest by guest.

A list without tiers grows until the budget says no for you.
