Pets at your wedding: including your dog without surprises

Having your dog carry the rings or just be in the photos takes planning. Venue rules, a day-of handler, and a backup plan.

More and more couples want to include their dog in the wedding, even if just for photos or walking down the aisle. It is entirely doable, as long as you treat it as its own logistics item, not a detail that will sort itself out on the day.

Check the venue's rules in advance

•
Some venues (châteaux, restaurants) do not allow animals, even for an hour
•
Others allow them outdoors only, not inside the reception hall
•
Ask explicitly, do not assume it will be fine
•
Also check the caterer's rules if the dog will be near the tables

A dedicated handler, not the couple

•
Name one person (friend, family, or specialized vendor) responsible for the dog all day
•
That person handles breaks, water, needs, and the animal's stress level
•
They bring the dog in at the right moment (ceremony entrance, photos) and take it away after
•
Dedicated "dog of honor" handler services exist in big cities for exactly this role

The easiest window: photos, not the whole evening

Most couples limit the dog's presence to the ceremony and a photo session, then have it picked up by a family member before the dinner and party. A ceremony rarely runs longer than 30 minutes, a stretch most dogs handle fine with a bit of prep. A full evening with loud music and a crowd is more stressful for the animal.
Always have a backup plan: if the dog is stressed, unwell, or simply uncooperative on the day, the handler should be able to remove it without disturbing you.
