Changing your name after the wedding: steps and timelines

Legal name versus name of use, which administrations to notify and in what order: ID card, passport, bank, employer.

In France, marriage does not automatically change your legal family name on the civil registry: each spouse legally keeps their birth name. What marriage allows is using your spouse's name as a "nom d'usage" (name of use) in everyday life, simply by presenting the family record book or the marriage certificate, with no court procedure needed.

Name of use versus legal family name

•
Legal family name: the one recorded on the civil registry, passed on to children, does not change automatically with marriage
•
Name of use: the spouse's name (or both names combined) used day to day, with no change to the civil registry
•
The name of use can be adopted at any point after the wedding, there is no deadline
•
The name of use can also be dropped at any time, including after a divorce

Where to start

The first step is getting several copies of the marriage certificate from the town hall where the wedding was held, plus the updated family record book. These documents serve as proof for every step that follows, often requested as originals or certified copies.

Administrations to notify, in a logical order

•
National ID card and passport: update these first, they are the reference identity documents for everything else
•
Health insurance (Sécurité sociale): updating your carte vitale and Ameli account
•
Bank: bank details, cards, checkbook under the new name of use
•
Employer: HR department for payslips and professional documents
•
Tax authority: updating your online account and upcoming tax notices
•
Other bodies: family allowance fund, supplemental health insurance, insurers, various subscriptions

Timelines to expect

Renewing the ID card and passport generally takes several weeks depending on the time of year and the town hall, a delay worth planning for if travel abroad is planned soon after the wedding (honeymoon included). Other administrative steps (bank, health insurance) are usually faster once identity documents are updated.
