Mariages.net reports 51% of couples above their initial budget. The venue is not always the surprise: it is lines you underestimate because they arrive late or scale per unit.

Top four overruns

1. Guest count: every unplanned +1 = €150–250
2. Drinks: open bar or consumption poorly estimated (+15–30% vs initial quote)
3. Decor: centerpieces, furniture rental, lighting added late
4. Late vendors: photobooth, shuttle bus, celebrant booked 3 months out
Lock the guest list before the final caterer quote. See open bar vs consumption to price drinks.

How to protect yourself

Minimum 8% contingency on total budget.
Written guest cap shared with families (see conflict-free guest list).
Any add-on after D-90 goes through trade-off: where does the euro come from?
